what is the Spring Seal/Spring Energized Seal/Variseal ?

Spring Seal/Spring Energized Seal/Variseal is a high-performance sealing element with a U-shaped Teflon inner special spring. By applying appropriate spring force and system fluid pressure, the sealing lip (face) is pushed out and gently pressed against the metal surface being sealed to generate excellent sealing effect. The actuation effect of the spring can overcome slight eccentricity of the metal mating surface and wear of the sealing lip, while maintaining the expected sealing performance.

Teflon (PTFE) is a sealing material with superior chemical resistance and good heat resistance compared to perfluorocarbon rubber. It can be applied to the vast majority of chemical fluids, solvents, as well as hydraulic and lubricating oils. Its low swelling ability allows for long-term sealing performance. Various special springs are used to overcome the elastic problems of PTFE or other high-performance rubber plastics, Developed seals that can replace the vast majority of applications in static or dynamic (reciprocating or rotary motion), with a temperature range from refrigerant to 300 ℃, and a pressure range from vacuum to ultra-high pressure of 700kg, with a movement speed of up to 20m/s. Springs can be used in various high-temperature corrosive fluids by selecting stainless steel, Elgiloy Hastelloy, etc. according to different usage environments.

The spring  seal can be made according to the AS568A standard O-ring groove (such as radial shaft seal, piston seal, axial face seal, etc.), completely replacing the universal O-ring. Due to the lack of swelling, it can maintain good sealing performance for a long time. For example, for mechanical shaft seals used in high-temperature corrosive environments in petrochemical processes, the most common cause of leakage is not only uneven wear of the sliding ring, but also the deterioration and damage of the O-ring. After switching to HiPerSeal, problems such as rubber softening, swelling, surface coarsening, and wear can be completely improved, thus greatly improving the service life of mechanical shaft seals.

The spring  seal is suitable for both dynamic and static applications. In addition to the sealing applications in high-temperature corrosive environments mentioned above, it is very suitable for sealing components of air and oil pressure cylinders due to its low sealing lip friction coefficient, stable sealing contact pressure, high pressure resistance, allowable large radial run out, and groove size error. It replaces U-shaped or V-shaped compression to achieve excellent sealing performance and service life.

Installation of Spring Seal

The rotary spring  seal should only be installed in open grooves.

To cooperate with concentricity and stress free installation, follow the following steps:

1. Place the seal into an open groove;

2. Install the cover without tightening it first;

3. Install the shaft;

4. Fix the cover on the body.

Characteristic of spring seal  as  following:

1. The sealing performance is not affected by insufficient lubrication during start-up;

2. Effectively reduce wear and frictional resistance;

3. Through the combination of different sealing materials and springs, different sealing forces can be displayed to meet various application needs. Special CNC machining mechanisms are used, without mold costs – especially suitable for a small number of diverse sealing components;

4. The resistance to chemical corrosion and heat resistance are far superior to commonly used sealing rubber, with stable dimensions and no deterioration in sealing performance caused by volume swelling or shrinkage;

5. Exquisite structure, can be installed in standard O-ring grooves;

6. Significantly improve sealing capacity and service life;

7. The groove of the sealing element can be filled with any anti pollution material (such as silicone) – but it is not suitable for radiation environments;

8. As the sealing material is Teflon, it is very clean and does not pollute the process. The friction coefficient is extremely low, and even in extremely low speed applications, it is very smooth without any “hysteresis effect”;

9. Low starting friction resistance, able to maintain low starting power performance even if the machine is shut down for a long time or operates intermittently

Application of Spring Energized Seal

The spring seal is a special sealing element developed for applications with high temperature corrosion, difficult lubrication, and low friction. The combination of different Teflon composite materials, advanced engineering plastics, and corrosion-resistant metal springs can fully meet the increasingly demanding diversity needs of industry. Typical applications include:

1. Axial seals for the rotating joint of the loading and unloading arm;

2. Seals for painting valves or other painting systems;

3. Seals for vacuum pumps;

4. Beverage, water, beer filling equipment (such as filling valves) and seals for the food industry;

5. Seals for automotive and aerospace industries, such as power steering gears;

6. Seals for measuring equipment (low friction, long service life);

7. Seals for other process equipment or pressure vessels.

Seal principle as following:

PTFE plate spring combination U-shaped sealing ring (pan plug seal) is formed by applying appropriate spring tension and system fluid pressure to push out the sealing lip and gently press against the metal surface being sealed, forming an excellent sealing effect.

Working Limits:

Pressure: 700kg/cm2

Temperature: 200-300 ℃

Linear speed: 20m/s

Medium used: oil, water, steam, air, solvents, drugs, food, acid and alkali, chemical solutions.
